FIRST RESPONDERS

According to a research report on SAMHSA.org titled, “First Responders: Behavioral Health Concerns, Emergency Response, and Trauma”. It is estimated that 30 percent of first responders develop behavioral health conditions including, but not limited to, depression and posttraumatic stress disorder. The article also stated that not only are, “First responders are always at the forefront of each incident or disaster, and they ensure the safety and well-being of the population. They are, however, at great danger of being exposed to potentially traumatic situations that pose risk of harm to them or the people under their care. This constitutes a great risk for the behavioral health of first responders, putting them at risk for stress, PTSD, depression, substance use, and suicide ideation and attempts.” (1)

Every day firefighters, police and emergency medical services (EMS) are surrounded by trauma and putting their lives on the line on a regular basis. These first responders, put their lives online, to help and serve their communities and country. It is no surprise that some tend to suffer from stress, anxiety, and trauma exposure. Some may “desensitize” themselves or have “survivor’s guilt” from the pressure of their jobs, the traumatic exposure of death, catastrophic injuries and disasters are strenuous to first responders and with time put them at an increased risk of trauma.

No matter what kind of coping mechanisms they use, eventually they will need some kind of help in coping with these issues, first responders are in critical need of mental health care.
